ਸਰਮ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਦੁਇ ਸਸੁਰ ਭਏ ॥
saram surat du-ay sasur bha-ay.
Hard work and heigher concious are my mother-in-law and father-in-law;
Kazi kwa bidii na fahamu ya juu ni mama mkwe na baba mkwe wangu;

ਕਰਣੀ ਕਾਮਣਿ ਕਰਿ ਮਨ ਲਏ ॥੨॥
karnee kaaman kar man la-ay. ||2||
I have made good deeds my spouse.
Nimefanya vitendo vizuri viwe mwenzi wangu,

ਸਾਹਾ ਸੰਜੋਗੁ ਵੀਆਹੁ ਵਿਜੋਗੁ ॥
saahaa sanjog vee-aahu vijog.
Union with the Saints is my wedding date, and detachment from the worldly affairs and union with God is my marriage.
Muungano na Watakatifu ni tarehe yangu ya harusi, na kujitenga kutoka shughuli za kidunia na muungano na Mungu ni ndoa yangu.

ਸਚੁ ਸੰਤਤਿ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਜੋਗੁ ॥੩॥੩॥
sach santat kaho naanak jog. ||3||3||
Nanak says, Truth is the child born of this Union.
Nanak anasema, Ukweli ni mwana anayezaliwa kutokana na Muungano huu.

ਪਉਣੈ ਪਾਣੀ ਅਗਨੀ ਕਾ ਮੇਲੁ ॥
pa-unai paanee agnee kaa mayl.
When the air, water and fire unite, then this body is created,
Wakati hewa, maji na moto unaungana, basi mwili huu unaumbwa,

ਚੰਚਲ ਚਪਲ ਬੁਧਿ ਕਾ ਖੇਲੁ ॥
chanchal chapal buDh kaa khayl.
and the game of mercurial and wandering intellect starts within it.
Na mchezo wa akili isiyo na uthabiti na inayozurura unaanza ndani mwake.

ਨਉ ਦਰਵਾਜੇ ਦਸਵਾ ਦੁਆਰੁ ॥
na-o darvaajay dasvaa du-aar.
It has nine doors (or openings, such as eyes, ears, etc.), which are apparent. There is the tenth unseen door which can lead to supreme spiritual state.
Ina milango minne (ama uwazi, kama vile macho, masikio, na kadhalika), ambayo ni dhahiri. Kuna mlango wa kumi usioonekana ambao unaweza kuongoza kwa hali kuu ya kiroho.

ਬੁਝੁ ਰੇ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਏਹੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥੧॥
bujh ray gi-aanee ayhu beechaar. ||1||
O wise one, reflect upon this and understand it.
Ee mwenye busara, tafakari kuhusu hayo na uyaelewe.

ਕਥਤਾ ਬਕਤਾ ਸੁਨਤਾ ਸੋਈ ॥
kathtaa baktaa suntaa so-ee.
God pervading in all is the One who speaks, and listens to everything.
Mungu anayeenea kwa yote ni yule Mmoja anayezungumza, na kusikiza kila kitu.

ਆਪੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੇ ਸੁ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਹੋਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
aap beechaaray so gi-aanee ho-ee. ||1|| rahaa-o.
The one who reflects upon his own self is truly wise.
Yule anayetafakari kuhusu nafsi yake kwa kweli ni mwenye busara.

ਦੇਹੀ ਮਾਟੀ ਬੋਲੈ ਪਉਣੁ ॥
dayhee maatee bolai pa-un.
The body is dust; the wind speaks through it.(Upon death the dust merges with dust and air into air)
Mwili ni mchanga, na upepo unazungumza kuupitia. (baada ya kufa mchanga unaungana na mchanga na hewa ndani mwa hewa).

ਬੁਝੁ ਰੇ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਮੂਆ ਹੈ ਕਉਣੁ ॥
bujh ray gi-aanee moo-aa hai ka-un.
(When someone dies) Reflect on this, O wise one, who has died.
(Wakati mtu anakufa) Tafakari kuhusu haya, Ee mwenye busara, ambaye amekufa.

ਮੂਈ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਬਾਦੁ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੁ ॥
moo-ee surat baad ahaNkaar.
Intellect attached to Maya, conflict and ego have died,
Akili iliyoambatishwa kwa Maya, mgogoro na ubinafsi umekufa,

ਓਹੁ ਨ ਮੂਆ ਜੋ ਦੇਖਣਹਾਰੁ ॥੨॥
oh na moo-aa jo daykhanhaar. ||2||
but the soul, which belongs to the One who cherishes all, does not die.
Lakini roho, ambayo ni miliki ya yule Mmoja anayethamini yote, haifi,

ਜੈ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਤਟਿ ਤੀਰਥ ਜਾਹੀ ॥
jai kaaran tat tirath jaahee.
The wealth of Naam, for the sake of which people journey to sacred shrines and holy rivers,
Utajiri wa Naam, ambao kwa ajili yake watu wanasafiri kwenda kwa ziara takatifu na mito takatifu,

ਰਤਨ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਘਟ ਹੀ ਮਾਹੀ ॥
ratan padaarath ghat hee maahee.
that priceless Naam dwells within the heart.
Naam isiyokadirika inaishi ndani mwa moyo.

ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਬਾਦੁ ਵਖਾਣੈ ॥
parh parh pandit baad vakhaanai.
A Pandit, reads endlessly and stirs up arguments and controversies,
Mwalimu wa busara wa Kihindu, anasoma bila mwisho na kuzua mabishano na utata.

ਭੀਤਰਿ ਹੋਦੀ ਵਸਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ॥੩॥
bheetar hodee vasat na jaanai. ||3||
but he does not realize the secret that Naam dwells deep within.
Lakini hagundui siri ya kwamba Naam inaishi ndani mwake kwa kina.

ਹਉ ਨ ਮੂਆ ਮੇਰੀ ਮੁਈ ਬਲਾਇ ॥
ha-o na moo-aa mayree mu-ee balaa-ay.
I understand that (when my body dies) it is not that I have died, but it is my demon (ignorant intellect) which has died.
Naelewa ya kwamba (wakati mwili wangu anakufa) sio kwamba nimekufa, bali ni pepo wangu (akili mjinga) ambaye amekufa.

ਓਹੁ ਨ ਮੂਆ ਜੋ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਇ ॥
oh na moo-aa jo rahi-aa samaa-ay.
The One who is pervading everyone does not die.
Yule Mmoja ambaye anaenea kwa kote hafi.

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ ॥
kaho naanak gur barahm dikhaa-i-aa.
Says Nanak, the Guru has revealed to me the all pervading God,
Asema Nanak, Guru amedhihirisha kwangu Mungu anayeenea kote.

ਮਰਤਾ ਜਾਤਾ ਨਦਰਿ ਨ ਆਇਆ ॥੪॥੪॥
martaa jaataa nadar na aa-i-aa. ||4||4||
and now none seems me to die or to be born.
Na sasa hakuna anayeonekana kwangu kufa au kuzaliwa.

ਸੁਣਿ ਸੁਣਿ ਬੂਝੈ ਮਾਨੈ ਨਾਉ ॥ ਤਾ ਕੈ ਸਦ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੈ ਜਾਉ ॥
sun sun boojhai maanai naa-o. taa kai sad balihaarai jaa-o.
I dedicate myself to the one who again and again listens, reflects and believes in God’s Name.
Najiweka wakfu kwa yule mmoja ambaye tena na tena anasikiza, kutafakari na kuamini Jina la Mungu.

ਆਪਿ ਭੁਲਾਏ ਠਉਰ ਨ ਠਾਉ ॥
aap bhulaa-ay tha-ur na thaa-o.
When God Himself leads one astray, then for him there is no other place for spiritual support.
Wakati Mungu mwenyewe anapotosha mtu, basi kwa mtu huyo hakuna mahali pengine pa msaada wa kiroho.

ਤੂੰ ਸਮਝਾਵਹਿ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਉ ॥੧॥
tooN samjhaavahi mayl milaa-o. ||1||
O’ God, whom You Yourself impart understanding of the Guru’s teachings, You unite him with Yourself
Ee Mungu, kwa yule ambaye Wewe mwenyewe unatolea uelewa wa mafundisho ya Guru, Wewe unamuunganisha nawe mwenyewe.

ਨਾਮੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਚਲੈ ਮੈ ਨਾਲਿ ॥
naam milai chalai mai naal.
O’ God, I pray that I be blessed with Naam, which shall go along with me in the end.
Ee Mungu, naomba ya kwamba nibarikiwe na Naam, ambayo itaambatana nami mwishowe.

ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਬਾਧੀ ਸਭ ਕਾਲਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
bin naavai baaDhee sabh kaal. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Without Naam, all are held in the grip of the fear of death.
Bila Naam, kila mtu ananaswa katika mshiko wa uoga wa kifo.

ਖੇਤੀ ਵਣਜੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਕੀ ਓਟ ॥
khaytee vanaj naavai kee ot.
just as farming or business is the support of our physical needs, similarly God’s Name is the support for our spiritual life.
Kama vile ukulima au biashara ni nguzo ya mahitaji yetu ya kimwili, sawia Jina la Mungu ni nguzo ya maisha yetu ya kiroho.

ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਬੀਜ ਕੀ ਪੋਟ ॥
paap punn beej kee pot.
One carries the seeds of sin and virtue together to the next life.
Mtu anabeba mbegu za dhambi na fadhila pamoja kwa maisha yanayofuata.

ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਜੀਅ ਮਹਿ ਚੋਟ ॥
kaam kroDh jee-a meh chot.
Those, whose soul is inflicted with the wounds of vices like lust and anger.
Wale, ambao roho yao imeumizwa na majeraha ya maovu kama ukware na hasira.

ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ਚਲੇ ਮਨਿ ਖੋਟ ॥੨॥
naam visaar chalay man khot. ||2||
They forsake God’s Name and depart from here with evil thoughts in their minds.
Wanaacha Jina la Mungu na kuondoka kutoka humu wakiwa na fikira mbaya akilini mwao.

ਸਾਚੇ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸਾਚੀ ਸੀਖ ॥
saachay gur kee saachee seekh.
They who receive true teachings from the True Guru.
Wale wanaopokea mafundisho ya kweli kutoka kwa Guru wa Kweli.

ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਸੀਤਲੁ ਸਾਚੁ ਪਰੀਖ ॥
tan man seetal saach pareekh.
They realize the eternal God. Their body and mind remain calm.
Wanagundua Mungu wa milele. Mwili na akili yao inabaki tulivu.

ਜਲ ਪੁਰਾਇਨਿ ਰਸ ਕਮਲ ਪਰੀਖ ॥
jal puraa-in ras kamal pareekh.
Their true test is, that their soul cannot survive without God’s Name, just asthe water-lily, or the lotus flowercannot survive without water.
Jaribio lao la kweli ni, kwamba roho yao haiwezi kuishi bila Jina la Mungu, kama vile yungiyungi , ama ua la lotasi haliwezi kuishi bila maji.

ਸਬਦਿ ਰਤੇ ਮੀਠੇ ਰਸ ਈਖ ॥੩॥
sabad ratay meethay ras eekh. ||3||
Imbued with the Guru’s Word, they become sweet, like the sugarcane juice.
Wakijawa na Neno la Guru, wanakuwa tamu, kama jusi ya muwa.

ਹੁਕਮਿ ਸੰਜੋਗੀ ਗੜਿ ਦਸ ਦੁਆਰ ॥
hukam sanjogee garh das du-aar.
it is according to their preordained destiny that they have been blessed with this body fortress with ten doors.
Ni kulingana na hatima yao iliyoagiziwa mapema ambapo wamebarikiwa na mwili huu kama ngome wenye milango kumi.

ਪੰਚ ਵਸਹਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਅਪਾਰ ॥
panch vaseh mil jot apaar.
The Saints dwell there, together with the Divine Light of the Infinite God.
Watakatifu wanaishi hapo, pamoja na Mwanga Takatifu wa Mungu asiye na mwisho.

ਆਪਿ ਤੁਲੈ ਆਪੇ ਵਣਜਾਰ ॥
aap tulai aapay vanjaar.
God Himself is the wealth, and He Himself is the trader.
Mungu mwenyewe ni utajiri, na Yeye mwenyewe ni mfanyabiashara.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਵਾਰਣਹਾਰ ॥੪॥੫॥
naanak naam savaaranhaar. ||4||5||
O Nanak, through Naam, God Himself embellishes the life of the Saints with the virtues.
Ee Nanak, kupitia Naam, Mungu mwenyewe anapamba maisha ya Watakatifu kwa Fadhila.

ਜਾਤੋ ਜਾਇ ਕਹਾ ਤੇ ਆਵੈ ॥
jaato jaa-ay kahaa tay aavai.
How can we know where (this soul) comes from?
Tutawezaje kujua pahali ambapo (roho hii) inatoka?

ਕਹ ਉਪਜੈ ਕਹ ਜਾਇ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥
kah upjai kah jaa-ay samaavai.
Where was is it created and with what does it ultimately merge?
Iliumbwa wakati upi na itaungana na nini mwishowe?

ਕਿਉ ਬਾਧਿਓ ਕਿਉ ਮੁਕਤੀ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
ki-o baaDhi-o ki-o muktee paavai.
Why it has been bound by worldly ties, and how does it obtain emancipation?
Kwa nini imefungwa kwa vifungo vya kidunia, na itawezaje kupata ukombozi?

ਕਿਉ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥੧॥
ki-o abhinaasee sahj samaavai. ||1||
How can it intuitively merge in the immortal God?
Itawezaje kuungana na Mungu asiyeweza kufa kwa hisia na silika?

ਨਾਮੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ॥
naam ridai amrit mukh naam.
The one in whose heart dwells nectar like Naam and who utters God’s Name,
Yule ambaye moyoni mwake mnaishi Naam kama nekta na anayetamka Jina la Mungu,

ਨਰਹਰ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਰਹਰ ਨਿਹਕਾਮੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
narhar naam narhar nihkaam. ||1|| rahaa-o.
like God becomes free from desire and hence free from worldly bonds.
Kama Mungu anakuwa huru kutoka tamaa na hivyo basi anakuwa huru kutoka vifungo vya kidunia.

ਸਹਜੇ ਆਵੈ ਸਹਜੇ ਜਾਇ ॥
sehjay aavai sehjay jaa-ay.
The soul comes to the world according to natural law, and also departs according to natural law.
Roho inakuja duniani kulingana na sheria ya kiasili, na inaondoka pia kulingana na sheria ya kiasili.

ਮਨ ਤੇ ਉਪਜੈ ਮਨ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥
man tay upjai man maahi samaa-ay.
Due to the desires of the mind, one is born and ultimately merges into the mind itself.
Kutokana na hamu za akili, mtu anazaliwa na mwishowe anaunganishwa katika akili yenyewe.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮੁਕਤੋ ਬੰਧੁ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥
gurmukh mukto banDh na paa-ay.
But the one who follows the Guru’s teachings remains free from the bonds ofdesire, and no obstacles are put in one’s path to liberation .
Lakini yule anayefuata mafundisho ya Guru anabaki huru kutoka vifungo vya tamaa, na hakuna vizuizi vinawekwa kwenye njia yake kufikia ukombozi.

ਸਬਦੁ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ਛੁਟੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਇ ॥੨॥
sabad beechaar chhutai har naa-ay. ||2||
By reflecting on the Guru’s word and by lovingly meditating on God’s Name, one is emancipated from the entanglements of desire.
Kwa kutafakari kuhusu neno la Guru na kwa kutafakari kwa upendo kuhusu Jina la Mungu, mtu anakombolewa kutoka misongamano ya tamaa.

ਤਰਵਰ ਪੰਖੀ ਬਹੁ ਨਿਸਿ ਬਾਸੁ ॥
tarvar pankhee baho nis baas.
Just as the birds come to sit in a tree at night, similarly mortals come to the world for a limited stay.
Kama vile ndege wanakuja kukaa kwa mti usiku, sawia binadamu wanakuja duniani kwa muda mfupi.

ਸੁਖ ਦੁਖੀਆ ਮਨਿ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਣਾਸੁ ॥
sukh dukhee-aa man moh vinaas.
While some are at peace, yet others are miserable due to the worldly attachment and spiritually they perish.
Wakati wengine wana amani, ilhali wengine wanataabika kutokana na viambatisho vya kidunia na wanaangamia kiroho.

ਸਾਝ ਬਿਹਾਗ ਤਕਹਿ ਆਗਾਸੁ ॥
saajh bihaag takeh aagaas.
Just as the birds look to the sky at dawn and fly in different directions to seek their daily food.
Kama vile ndege wanatazama anga kunapopambazuka na kupepea kwa mielekeo tofauti kutafuta chakula chao cha siku.

ਦਹ ਦਿਸਿ ਧਾਵਹਿ ਕਰਮਿ ਲਿਖਿਆਸੁ ॥੩॥
dah dis Dhaaveh karam likhi-aas. ||3||
Similarly the mortals go to earn their living according to their preordained destiny.
Sawia binadamu wanaenda kuchuma riziki kulingana na hatima zao zilizoagiziwa mapema.
